January Board Report

Student Administrative Council (SAC)

Results of the student center vote are in and seventy six percent of students voted against funding a student center building.
Thanks to help from Jack Bautsch and Carol Summers, twenty percent of the student body participated in the vote, which is very good compared to past elections where only two to five percent of the student body voted.

November Board of Trustees report

The student council had their first meeting of the year and reported out on their activities for the quarter. The focus of the meeting was informing students about the upcoming survey about the student center building proposal.

Notes from Board of Trustees 10/15/09

Chancellor Jill Wakefield announced two new trustees, Seattle City Light Superintendent Jorge Carrasco and Seattle University Administrator Gayatri Eassey. Jorge was unable to attend, but I did speak with Gayatri and she was great. She is very enthusiastic and excited to help our district.

Student Administrative Council (SAC)
• The 2009-2010 student leaders completed a two and a half week training that included SAC representatives, cabinet members, club leaders, Phi Theta Kappa representatives, Arts and Lecture staff, key college administration, and NSCC staff. This comprehensive training focused on strengthening the student leadership community at NSCC. Students were able to learn how the college works and how student leaders can be effective within the system.

Spring Fest was a success once again. This year students lined up to get a chance to dunk their favorite teacher in the dunk tank! The event lasted from 10 am to 2pm as students enjoyed the 2-dollar BBQ, Information tables, games, and activities.

The SAC application deadline was extended to May 22nd in order to gather more applicants. The Student Council is aggressively promoting the open positions by sending letters and emails to qualifying students and holding application tables in the hallways. The hiring committee plans to conduct interviews June 9th through the 11th

The SAC is working with students and administration to bring alternative energy on campus. An initial meeting was held with an alternative energy company to begin to lay the groundwork for supporting this
SAC had a table at the NSCC Earth day event on Thursday April 23rd where a survey was done that showed a large amount of student support for using S & A fees to fund a community garden and use rollover fees to purchase renewable energy equipment.

Student Administrative Council (SAC)
• The SAC met with Alan Ward in an effort to help reduce the cost of textbooks for students. As a result, Alan met with North’s web development team and the decision was made to post the ISBN’s of required textbooks next to each listed class on the new online course schedule. This will help students compare prices and find their books easily.

• With the help of NSCC’s Capital projects team, the SAC held two student Center presentations on Thursday Feb 12th to inform the student body about the proposed new student center. In order to document and gather student feedback, the SAC gave surveys to students about what they would like or dislike in a student center. This survey is and will be available on nsccstudentleadership.org until mid-April.
