Student Council

Who We Are Now

The Student Administrative Council of 2007-2008 is North’s student government. This year we have been charged with the important task of creating a new model of student government that will engage and represent the students of North Seattle Community College. The current student leader ship council consists of Liz Kendal and Suki Bourquin. They work under the direction of Jeffery Vasquez (Director of Student Leadership and Multicultural Programs) and Janet Hoppe-Leonard.

Questions We’re Asking

We have been asking questions like… What is the purpose of community college Student Government? How can we facilitate a group that best represents the diverse population of a community college? How do we engage students? What makes participating in student leadership valuable to the students serving and the students at large?  We have been asking these questions at public meetings and one on one with students at large. If you would like to participate in these public meetings all are welcome.

Your questions and answers make a difference!

Public Meeting Dates

All meetings will be held in the Green Room by the Espresso Lounge

What else have we been doing?

In order to gather more information regarding questions such as these we attended the American Association of Student Government in Bakersfield, California. At this conference several community colleges stated they had similar problems: low student participation and lack of commitment by student government members. However, we did not find a new solution to these problems. Student Governments nation wide seemed to see their representative roles as events and activities planners and coordinator of clubs. We would like to see the new Student Administrative Council expand beyond these roles.

We have been working to create job descriptions and a model that expands to create innovative opportunities for student participation is in the works. We are encouraged by student interest and participation in the process all ready.

Many students have already served this year by participating in The Universal Technology Fee Committee and starting this quarter six students will begin serving on the Service and Activity Fee Committee. While the UTF and S&A Fee Committee directly impact how student dollars are spent there are fifty committees campus wide for student to work on and make a difference.
