Date: 8 March 2010
Venue: Student Leadership & Multicultural Programs Office
Start time: 2:15pm
End time: 3:40pm

Present: Aaron, Michael, Richard, Rich, Xinying, Sabina, Xinzi, Janet, Jeffrey

Topics: Manuals, Hiring Process

Manuals

Questionnaires are in the process of being filled out for the manuals. Richard reminded everyone that the students from the project management class need the information back by Friday, 3/12/10. All SAC members feel that they can have this done by Friday.

Hiring Process

Helen asked everyone to complete their job description and forward them to her. The only job not filled at this time is the Research and Policy Coordinator. There was talk at last week’s meeting that this position overlaps with other positions and could be rolled in to the Student Advocacy Coordinator position so therefore we would only hire seven positions instead of eight. The problem with having only seven positions is that if someone drops out it is difficult to continue on with only six positions. Jeffrey pointed out that we could have an eighth position that works on state legislative initiatives. This way we would have a legislative contact on our campus which is what many other campuses are doing. Sabina pointed out that next year’s group can flush out whether they need seven or eight positions. Richard suggested that we just stick with the job descriptions that we have at this time and give it another year to work out the details. Sabina pointed out that she feels each SAC member should sign a contract stating that they understand what they are expected to do so it’s easier to dismiss someone if they aren’t being accountable. We also need a termination process in the new constitution.

Jeffrey agreed that we are getting the system more refined each year and it will continue to improve each year and he agrees that the hiring committee should hire 8 SAC members. Helen asked Rich to send out a hard copy letter to all eligible students to invite students to apply for SAC and cabinet positions. These letters need to be mailed out on 3/24/10.

There was discussion about how the students would be hired – make up of committee, how many will be interviewed etc.

New Registration System

Betsy Abts, director of Registration, attended the meeting to talk with the students about a new system for registration that is being proposed by the District IT team. The district team is coming back to the college to demonstrate the system and Betsy wants to have students at the table during this demonstration to make sure their voice and point of view is taken in to consideration. There is not a specific date set up but AARC has suggested the fourth week of April in the afternoon. Richard pointed out that it is difficult to get students to attend when the time is soft. Michael asked who has created this new system and she explained that district IT has built the system and SSCC is using it at this time. North doesn’t want to implement the system until they make sure that they won’t lose any functionality that they get from the current system which is why they want a lot of input before they start using this system. Betsy will let

Richard know when they need the names of the students that will attend the demonstration.

Report from Cindy

Selam, a student from the Strategic Planning Committee, is asking SAC for student opinions about facilities on campus. SAC suggested that she put a survey together for students to fill out to ask if improved facilities would attract more students to NSCC. SAC input included:

Better furniture in classrooms

Cleaner bathrooms

Dirty carpet in library and other areas

Walk through lounges are dirty

Non-functioning fountains

The Budget committee wants to know if the physical appearance of a college affects whether or not a student attends that college. SAC members felt that physical aesthetics are important to some students and they may go to another college that is more attractive. Other students go to a college for whatever program they are in and aesthetics are not important.

Cindy announced that Richard Lee, a student serving on the budget planning committee is asking staff and students to let their legislators know how cancelling state work study will affect the campus. He is asking SAC members to let administration on campus know that students are concerned about this issue.

1:30-1:45 The media center is facing budget cuts and they are asking for both additional funding and sending a message to the management.

1:45-1:55 Ideas for training new S&A faculty advisers for next quarter. Decided to give the newcomers an overview of the process and recap the individual research of the S&A funded projects.

1:55-2:05 Discussion of appropriateness of paying for food with out budget. Legally, it’s fine. The consensus was that intention is central issue. The SFB began having one quarterly catered meetings to grow the comradeship between the members, making a more cohesive atmosphere during meetings and increasing collaboration outside of meetings. The intention was not to avoid paying for lunch 4 days of the school year. Sabina thought that this morality test could be codified into the club, SFB and leadership bylaws.

2:00-2:10 Discussion of having an open meeting and the creation of materials for getting more people involved. Zach said he would work on some materials in his spare time.

2:10-2:25 Kevin Christopher of Student Activities/Arts and Lecture Students asked for $1,040 to pay for training. Two student staff members are graduating this year and Christopher wanted to bring in their replacements early so they could shadow the current staff members over the spring quarter.

(591 ml) water container was filled in just 10 seconds. But you’re not only saving time, you’re also saving the planet. The fountain is equipped with a counter that displays the total amount of water bottles that didn’t get used. By filling your reusable container, you reduce the amount of non-reusable plastic water bottles that end up in a landfill.

This fountain is the result of Phi Theta Kappa’s efforts to contribute to the student body and improve campus life. Thanks to their work, the school administration has agreed to install three more of these water fountains over the next few years.

Many students are not aware that the campus offers a carpool matching service. The forms are available in the Security Office, on the first floor between the College Center and Administration buildings.

Students in carpools are eligible for lower quarterly parking rates, dedicated parking areas and a host of other perks. Stop by the Security Office and ask for the forms to find out more. You could just save yourself time, gas money, parking fees and reduce your carbon footprint in the process.

The campus Muslim Student Association (MSA) held an open meeting last month, with many attendees and lots of useful information.

The MSA meets every Thursday from 1:00pm-2:00pm, usually in the Club Room located next to the sandwich bar in the cafeteria. All students, faculty, staff and neighbors are welcome at the meetings. This is a great opportunity for Muslim students to gather together and for non-Muslim students to meet their fellow students and have their questions answered.

For more information, visit the MSA’s club website at:
