Summary
Fee Board Meeting
Monty wants more detail of Richard’s list. Deadline will be next Monday.
Sabina reported several requests from last meeting:
- UTF fees
- Science department: replace spectrometers, which would be used for physics, chemistry and biology classes
- Human science department : 15 cameras Satellites program
- ESL: E-dictionary
IT Advisory Committee
Dan is serving in this committee, but they need one more student representative.
Meditation Room
Muslim Student Association is seeking help to look for a new location. The college may reserve a room for them in the new building but cannot find them a room available to move to for now.
Faculty Evaluations
Richard was asked by campus administrators to help get more students to complete faculty evaluations. Apparently, proportionally few students complete in class evaluations. To support this request, Richard plans to write an article to post on our website describing the current faculty evaluation process.
Marci also asked Richard to work with SAC and other students to develop a student plan or suggested method for how students might evaluate faculty in the future. This student plan could then be presented in the future when the faculty union is renegotiated.
Furniture
Richard said the administration recommended that we work with staff to come up with a cost estimate for this project. Since the college is probably short on funds to purchase furniture, it was also suggested that SAC work with members of the Student Fee Board to draft a request to use roll-over funds to purchase this furniture. If possible, joint funding (college $ & student $) would be most desirable.
Haiti Relief Fundraiser
Richard has been attending the planning meetings which take place every Tuesday. He reported that this group is making good progress in the planning and that volunteers would be needed on the day of the event to help run it. He plans to continue attending these meetings and will keep SAC updated.
Olympia Rally
Rodolfo asked Richard if SAC would support the classified union recruit students to attend a protest rally in Olympia on Monday, February 15. Rodolfo said they (the union) will be renting a bus to take students to Olympia to protest with the union against proposed legislative cuts to education. Personally, individual SAC members have mixed feelings about supporting this effort but agreed to help Rodolfo by spreading the word to other students.
Christian Rusby will attend the Feb 16 meeting to update SAC on sustainability initiatives.
Paper Use Reduction Initiative
Sabina shared a document she is working on to share with campus leaders to gain their support in reducing the use of paper on our campus. She will make a presentation to the College Council, this afternoon, to request their support with this endeavor. This idea arose from expressed student concerns on how some faculty require their students to print lots of materials that 1) cost students money and 2) wastes paper.
We spent about 30 minutes discussing Sabina’s paper and giving her feedback on how to make it stronger. It was suggested that a list be created that gives examples on how faculty and staff might reduce their use of paper such as: Preprint course packets – they cost less and use less paper.
Ultimately, the purpose of this initiative is to reduce the use of paper on campus. This proposal is further a response to student’s request to reduce the use of paper in order to promote environmental sustainability.
Sabina believes that faculty and staff should be required to use Paper Cut (a paper use tracking devise. If students are required to use Paper Cut, staff should be required to use Paper Cut.
Joint SG Meeting
Jeffrey will contact South and Central student governments to schedule a joint meeting with an open agenda to occur the last week of February or the first week of March. Our first preference is to meet on a Thursday from 2-4p and our second choice would be to meet on a Friday from 12–2p or 1-3p
Students of Color Conference
The SoCC will take place April 22, 23 and 24 in Yakima, Washington. Information and applications are currently available on our website at http://www.nsccstudentleadership.org/multicultural/socc/
This conference focuses on ethnic and cultural identity and social justice. We have funding to send up to 20 students. Completing an application does not guarantee acceptance to attend so students are encouraged to make a good application. The application deadline is February 19.
Diversity Lecture Series
Eric Liu will speak Wednesday, Feb. 3 at 11:00 in the Baxter Events Center. Everyone is encouraged to attend. The title of Eric’s talk is “The True American Patriot.”
Campus Map
Richard shared a plan on how we can create our own map in spite of a lack of campus support. We will obtain a copy of the map that is printed on the back of the handbook and update it the best we can by adding a legend showing where the espresso stand, cafeteria, wellness center etc are located. We will then print and post on our own bulletin boards. SAC supported this plan!
