North Seattle Community College Students Create and Fund Sustainability Development
By Alexis Baranov | July 9, 2009
When sustainability efforts faltered at North Seattle Community College due to budget issues, students listened to all the reasons why those efforts would not happen and made it happen anyway. During spring quarter 2009 Students for Sustainability (S4S) working in coordination with Student Leadership, the Student Fee Board, NSCC’s Executive Team, the Sustainability Club, college faculty and staff, created a student funded Sustainability Coordinator position and a separate Sustainability Fund. S4S is made up of a core group of NSCC students. The new group is chaired by Roy Flores, NSCC’s Vice President of Student Development Services. The goal of Students for Sustainability is provide the ground work for others on campus, in the district and the community to build on.
The student sponsored part-time Sustainability Coordinator will review and move forward sustainability efforts and education on North’s campus, and further sustainability efforts will be advanced with the Sustainability Fund. The fund is ear-marked for sustainability projects which may include an alternative energy lab, education, a think-tank for curriculum development, personal and professional development in the area of sustainability and other action items that are approved by a student-based sustainability fee board.
The progress of sustainability development and education is being moved forward by the students of North Seattle Community College.

I am the founder of the Renewable Energy Student Faculty Association (RESFA) at Highline Community College and also currently the Student Body President at Highline. I am very impressed with your push toward sustainability and would love it if you could send me some more specifics on how much funding is earmarked and how you went about hiring a sustainability coordinator. (is it a student?) We are currently in the process of making a sustainability policy for our school and would love to have some good idea’s on what the other schools in the area are doing. Thank you so much! GO GREEN!!!

Well, the student leader of the Sustainability Club is Warren Woo, and the school sustainability coordinator is Christian Rusby. Contacting either of them will send you in the right direction, and you can find their emails in the clubs section of this site.
