Student Administrative Council - Public Meeting Minutes
Thursday, November 6th, 2008
Start: 4:00pm
End: 6:30pm
Attendance: Jasmine Tolle, Matthew Lord, Brandin Watson, Alexis Baranov, Cayla Poznanovich, Jeffrey Vasquez, Janet Hoppe-Leonard, special guests Kendall Jackson and Phyllis Kenney, student guests
This was the second public meetings held in the Green Room by the Student Administrative Council. This meeting was held in the evening to give those students not available for our last meeting a chance to get involved and share in our efforts to better this school. Again this meeting was designed to be an information sharing session in which we as council members could share some of the things that we have been doing to enhance student life here on campus. By inviting two guests to speak our goal was to have an open dialogue to get down to some real issues students face. Although one of our guests was not able to attend the meeting we feel like we were successful in our goal. We received some wonderful feedback from the audience and some suggestions about how we can further the work that we do to.
Introductions:
Alexis began the meeting by introducing the group and asking us to say a few words about what we do and who we are. She spent a few minutes explaining the new model and communicated the importance of input in our efforts to support the students.
The audience introduced themselves, saying just a few words about themselves and why they came to this meeting.
Survey:
Jasmine began by giving the audience background information as to why we conducted this survey, its purpose being to guide our goals over the next year so that we may affect student life appropriately. Through the use of a PowerPoint, Jasmine reported the results of the survey and provided some analysis of those results. Some actions being taken to address the issues uncovered by the survey include the self defense class being offered by Jeff Caldwell, the Capitol project which will help address some tutoring issues, and the JHOG document created to help students transfer more smoothly.
Campus Maintenance:
Alexis wanted to take some time to explain why some things might not be fixed as soon as we want. She explained that the maintenance team works very hard and is very backed up. She mentioned the new electronic method of putting in work orders. His is expected to save time and make the whole process more efficient.
Safety:
Jasmine discussed the basic issues around safety on this campus, things like theft and vandalism. She explained what the college is already doing to maintain a high level of security on campus and what we are looking to do in the future. Aside from security cameras in the library and bookstore, she reminded the audience of the self defense class opportunity coming up.
Food services:
Kendal Jackson began this section of the public meeting by giving a history of the Munch Mart. He explained that as the espresso lounge went in (about a year ago) the munch mart began to lose money. As a result it was decided that the Munch Mart needed to be reorganized. The idea is for the Munch Mart to be a self serve, vending machine oriented eating area with microwaves and places to sit.
The cafeteria is another food service that has been losing money. Again the proposed solution is to reorganize the service provided. NSCC has hired an outside consulting firm, Sodexho, to help address the issues surrounding food here on campus. The results from the consultation will be available soon. In the interim many food choices have been made available in the espresso lounge and construction on the Munch Mart is underway.
Legislative academy:
Jasmine gave us some basic background about the Legislative Academy and Voice Academy, explaining that a group of students from all over the state come together twice a year to discuss issues related to higher education, and later to lobby for change in those areas. We passed out the Student Voice white paper to the audience which was composed last year. Many of the issues discussed on the white paper have taken the form of a bill, and will be going through the legislative process this session.
Disabilities Services:
Jasmine and Alexis have organized a focus group to determine what the awareness of disabilities support is here on campus and in what ways can Student Leadership help improve those services and awareness.
Enrollment Fair:
The purpose of the Enrollment Fair is to bring awareness to the benefits of early registration and to the supportive services offered to new and continuing students such as online text books, financial aid, scholarships, and advising.
Health Fair:
November 19 from 10-2pm there will be a Health Fair on campus giving out free mammograms to eligible students (registration required), free blood glucose screening, and free bone density screenings. There will also be information on the effects of smoking, insurance information, and lots more general information regarding health.
Book Exchange:
Matthew announces the new book exchange service that NSCC now offers. He explains that it can be accessed through our website and that its success depends on the amount of students using the service.
Phyllis Kenney:
Traffic held up Representative Kenney’s joining us during meeting hours. However, she did show and those who remained had a delightful and informative discussion with her.
